It is a recurring scourge. The teams of the society for the protection of animals (SPA) of Chilleurs-aux-Bois are often faced with the abandonment of animals, especially dogs, but especially cats. The vast majority of these felines are not sterilized.
“A couple of cats can breed up to 20,000 kittens in four years, warns Cécile Godeau, team leader at the SPA, alongside Helena Collado, manager of the refuge. “Sterilization would be the key to fight against stray cats.”
Relay families welcome kittens under two months old while waiting for their placement in an adoptive family or at the cattery. It’s a way to unclog the SPA which, especially in summer, is overwhelmed.

How do you become a relay family?
These are volunteers who come forward. SPA membership is required. “12 euros per year. Of the 80 volunteerswe only have six relay families in the sectors of Fleury-les-Aubrais, Rebréchien, etc. We don’t have any in the Pithiverais“, says Cécile Godeau. You have to be able to reserve a room especially for cats. “They can be carriers of disease. Volunteers are really asked to be careful, especially if they have other animals. Their own cat has to be vaccinated,” adds Helena Collado. Of course, you have to love animals.
What does that imply?
Plenty of availability to take care of cats, if only to take him to the vet, for example. “We favor relay families so that the cats can socialize too. It’s a real investment”, continues the manager.
Can families accommodate multiple cats?
Yes, provided they have several pieces per sibling.
Who pays for food and care?
The SPA provides everything. “Croquettes, litter, toys. Families just have to come to the shelter to collect everything,” says Helena Collado. For mileage costs, and according to a scale, some people can be reimbursed. Veterinary costs are also covered. A voucher is given to them.

Once the two months have passed, can cats be adopted?
Yes. “Legally, an animal can only be placed from two months”, recalls Cécile Godeau. Relay families who welcome cats will receive potential adopters. They will be able to see the animal. “If they have a crush, the handover takes place at the shelter.”
Currently, forty kittens, including seven mothers, are placed in relay families. The SPA would like to have more families on the Pithiverais sector.
